The richest black man alive and Nigerian Billionaire Businessman Aliko Dangote who recently declared his seeming interest in buying English football giants Arsenal, has revealed the reasons behind his plans for the North London club.
He believes that buying a Premier League club
would help raise the profile of Nigeria. Dangote has been criticized especially after his comments on buying Arsenal by most Nigerians for not investing in the domestic
leagues in the Country, but he reckons that the Gunners represent a much better project.
'The issue is that if I buy all the Nigerian clubs, the Nigerian flags will continue to remain here,' Dangote told Forbes.
The 52-year-old added, 'Buying Arsenal will take the Nigerian flag worldwide. Just like
whenever (Chelsea owner) Roman Abramovich is mentioned, the name of his
country comes up. Everyone knows he's Russian.' The Billionaire in 2010 tried to acquire some shares in the London Club but was rebuffed. He tried to take over the 15
per cent owned by Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith who eventually sold to American Billionaire and current Arsenal highest shareholder Stan
Kroenke.
