The brazilians went ahead after only 15 minutes with what appeared to be apparently their best decent passing move of the game, with Santos forward Robinho who is looking much better now at 31 years of age to finsh the move and slam the ball into the top corner. But a late show by the Paraguayans drew them back from the brink of a loss and Basel striker Derlis Gonzalez levelled proceedings to take the game into extra time. The game eventually went into penalties with the scoreline ending at 3-4, Brazillian's Everton Ribeiro and Douglas Costa missed their spot kicks while Gonzalez scored the decisive spot kick to defy the odds and set up a semi-final berth with another South American power-house Argentina.
