Schalke 04 sack Roberto Di Matteo from his managerial duties after just two wins in his last ten matches in charge, according to a report from German magazine Sport Bild.

The 44-year-old Italian manager took charge of Schalke for Jens Keller back in October 2014. Di Matteo led the German club to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 earlier this season before failing short to Real Madrid 5-4 aggregate, despite Schalke's 4-3 second leg victory at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Schalke fell short of qualifying for next season's Champions League, ultimately falling to fifth place in the final Bundesliga standings after suffering a 2-0 defeat at Hamburg. The result allowed the hosts a second chance at securing their Bundesliga status.
"You have to ask questions about everyone in a position of sporting responsibility, be they players, coaches or management," general manager Horst Heldt told reporters following Schalke's loss to Hamburg on Saturday.
Di Matteo, a former Italy midfielder, led Chelsea to an unexpected Champions League title in 2012, but his reign as manager lasted less than a year. He was fired early in the following season with the club's defense of the European trophy in tatters.
Born in Switzerland, Di Matteo played for Swiss clubs before moving to Lazio in Rome and later to Chelsea. His coaching career started with Milton Keynes Dons and continued at West Bromwich Albion before he joined Chelsea, first as an assistant in 2011.
