He has ended speculation about his immediate future and says he will take a break for now.
Klopp, who has been linked with taking over at Liverpool, made his decision after talks with his agent Marc Kosicke on Monday.
"After seven intense and emotional years, I think it's a good idea to let the numerous memories settle in before I take on a new challenge with my coaching team, refreshed and fully motivated," Klopp said in a statement published by Germany's SID agency. "I'm going to take a break until further notice."
In his last match in charge, Dortmund lost the German Cup final to Wolfsburg 3-1 on Saturday. He won a domestic league and cup double in 2012 while also adding two German Super Cups to the club's collection, and a Champions League final appearance in 2013.
"The pain of leaving is slowly sinking in, it really hurts," said Klopp after his final game on Saturday. "I've just tried to express my thanks to each of my players because it has been an extraordinary pleasure and a huge honor to be able to work with them.
"It's difficult for me to let go. Now there won't be a Cup party, just a farewell party."
