The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) confirmed last week that it had hired ex-Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh as the new Coach of the Super Eagles team after ousting also another ex-international Stephen Keshi from the job.
Oliseh would be unveiled this week, all things being equal, according to the NFF as their contract negotiation reaches conclusion.
Here are 15 things you probably didn't know about the new Super Eagles boss....
1. His full name is Sunday Ogochukwu Oliseh.
2. Born 1974 in Abavo, Delta state.
3. Was a physical, technical defensive midfielder in his days.
4. He started his senior football career with Julius Berger FC in 1989.
5. Played at two World Cup's for the Super Eagles in 1994 and 1998.
6. Also participated in the Olympic Gold Medal winning team of 1996.
7. Scored only twice in 54 appearances for the Super Eagles in an international career spanning 9 years (from 1993 - 2002).
8. was sacked by German giants Borrusia Dortmund during playing days after punching teammate Vahin Hashemian while on loan at Bochum in 2004.
9. Mostly remembered for scoring the goal in the group stage match against Spain at the World Cup in 1998 which Nigeria won 3-2. A throw-in deep in the Spanish half was headed clear by a defender only for Oliseh to run and unleash a very venomous strike from about 25 yards which took Spanish goalie at the time Andoni Zubizarreta by complete surprise.
12. Retired from professional football at the age of 31 in January 2006 after playing half season for Belgian club K.R.C. Genk.
13. Was Sports director at Belgian club side Eupen 2007
14. He holds the UEFA Pro Licence, the most advanced coaching licence in Europe. Only a handful of Nigerians are known to possess this coaching certification.
15. No Nigerian national team coach is active on social media at present, but he is not only active on Twitter, he also has his own website www.sundayoliseh.tv and maintains a blog where he shares his knowledge of the game.
